Now that you’ve designed and built a product, you need to get people interested in using it so you can acquire an on-going source of customers. As a new business owner with a brand new product, your biggest competitor isn’t another similar business but rather consumer indifference. Every member of your target market is bombarded daily by businesses asking for their time, attention and money. Therefore, you need to figure out how to get your target market to notice your new product. Like entrepreneur John Rampton says “ No matter how innovative the product or service is, customers can’t buy it unless they know about it.”  Here are some helpful tips designed to drum up interest in your new product.

Find Your Ideal Users and Interact with Them

You need to find the people who you consider to be the ideal users of your product and then interact with them. You may discover that these people hang out at industry-related forums online or in particular Facebook groups. When you find your ideal users, don’t just self-promote but instead engage with them to add value to the ongoing conversations. When talking about your product, let people know what it is that makes your product better than similar products on the marketplace. Yes, it’s perfectly fine to be excited but not a great idea to be overly boastful. Point out what makes your product unique and let people know how they’ll benefit from using it.

Invest Time in social media marketing and Reach Out to Bloggers

If you haven’t yet done so, set up a Facebook page and Twitter account for your product. Social media is not a passive medium as you have to devote at least an hour each day to creating posts on Facebook and tweeting on Twitter.

You also should reach out to influential bloggers who are willing to write posts about your product. As Tomoson CEO Jeff Foster says, “Bloggers and other online influencers have huge audiences. Even better, their readers trust them.” A good way to entice a blogger to post about your product is to offer them a free sample in return for a review. The most influential bloggers in every industry routinely receive freebies in exchange for a few kind words so don’t be afraid to ask. Just be sure you show a lot of enthusiasm when reaching out to a blogger and highlight those things that make your product unique, exciting and different.

Use Traditional Media

Even though newer online media grabs all the glory today, traditional forms of media such as print, TV and radio are still great for sparking interest in a new product. When creating ads, be sure to clearly spell out the elements of your product to make it newsworthy and interesting. How does it differ from other similar products? What are it’s clear benefits and how will it improve the lives of your target market? And by all means, don’t forget about other proven ways of spreading the word about new products such as trade shows, promotional events, direct mailing and speaking opportunities.

Create a SEO-Friendly Website

You will need to have a search-friendly website for your product that is optimized so it performs well in the search engines. If you don’t know how to SEO your site, hire someone who does. Make sure your site is user-friendly, coded correctly and full of keyword/key phrase copy complete with appropriate title tags, header text and meta info that accurately describes your new product.
