Small Biz Ownership: What You Should Know About Retaining Employees

You’re excited that your new business is growing. Things are moving along nicely and your projected sales figures tell you that you can now start hiring employees. After taking your time to go over resumes and interview candidates, you finally find money in your budget to take on your very first employee.
It takes you many long hours to get that new employee trained and in step with your goals. You may even have spent money having that employee trained to learn the specifics about your business so he/she can handle his/her job responsibilities. But what do you do when that employee decides to call it quits several months or even a couple of years down the road? If that were to happen, it could put your business into a tail-spin.
Retaining good workers is very important to any business but how do you make sure your best employees stick with you? Here are some tips for helping ensure you retain the best and brightest employees which by the way are the lifeblood of any business big or small.
Put Forth the Time and Effort to Hire Right
As the owner of a small business, you cannot afford to make even one bad hire because one, or a few, employees may make up most of your staff. This is why you need to invest time and effort toward seeking out the very best employees you can find. Don’t do what many small business owners do which is to hire ‘on the fly’ so you can quickly get the process over with just to take some of the load off your own shoulders.
Show Your Employees That They’ve Valued
Everybody wants to feel like they’re appreciated including employees. Saying thank you on a regular basis and doling out praise can help you retain your employees. Even a simple employee recognition program can help tremendously in making your staff feel appreciated. Instead of always pointing out what they’re doing wrong, shower your employees with praise when they do their jobs well. By showing appreciation toward those working for you, you’re more apt to hang onto your best workers which can only help your business move forward.
Ask for Feedback and Act On It
Get into the habit of asking your employees for their feedback, ideas, suggestions, etc. By allowing your employees to voice their opinions, they’ll feel as though they matter to you. If an employee has a great idea that can be put into action, instead of just praising that person for coming up with the idea, consider making the idea a reality.
Regardless of what stage your business is in, having employees leave is simply bad for business. The above tips are easy to implement and can guarantee great results. Once you have the right employees on staff, you need to engage with them positively so they don’t head for the door.
