Four Questions to Ask Yourself If You’re Thinking of Flying Solo
Have you been dreaming of ditching the ol’ 9-5 grind and going into business for yourself? Giving up that job security and flying solo is a brave thing to do. But how do you turn your dreams of running your own business into a reality? Here are four self-analytical questions that will help you discover whether you have what it takes to be your own boss. It’s important to answer these questions honestly as your answers need to be positive before you take the big step.
Question 1: Why Do You Want to Start Your Own Business?
Are you feeling a lot of frustration in your present job? Do you want to make more money? Be independent? Do something completely different? Or do you want to start a new business because you think you are good at what you want to base your business around?
If you are thinking of going into business for yourself because you think it’s not that hard to do, you may be in for the surprise of your life. Being your own boss is difficult as you will face many challenges. Your success is completely up to you and will depend on how hard you’re willing to work. There’s so much more involved with being your own boss than simply not having to be on time everyday as you will be working extremely hard in order for your business to make it.
Question 2: Do You Have Enough Self-Discipline to Work For Yourself?
Liking the idea of running your own business and actually succeeding at it are two different things as you will need to have a good deal of self-discipline in order to make it. As your own boss, you must be prepared for long hours in the beginning, be willing to learn new skills and understand that you must make some sacrifices along the way. You also will have to learn to say no to family and friends as you spend most of your waking hours working on keeping your business afloat. Running a business of any type requires a whole lot of self-discipline which is a trait not everybody has.
Question 3: Are You a Good Money Manager?
It’s one thing to earn loads of money and another to know how to make it last during more difficult times. Even if you’re an expert at what you do, you won’t be in business long if money burns a hole in your pocket. Knowing how to manage your money is absolutely essential as you will need to understand all the financial implications of running a business just as you know everything there is to know about the products or services you sell. Even if you plan on hiring a trusted professional to handle your business finances, you still have to play an active role in your business’s finances because your business is your dream and investment and no one else’s.
Question 4: Do You Have Staying Power?
When times get rough (and they will) do you have the staying power necessary to keep your business going even in the toughest of times? Running a business is not all sugar and spice as you are going to experience some turbulent times as most business owners do and especially during the first year or two. If you’re the type of person who throws in the towel when things are not going as planned, you are probably not well-suited to being your own boss. But if you feel you have the determination to see yourself through even when it seems the whole world is working against you, it’s likely that you do have what it takes to be your own boss.
